The following is a guide to use as you develop preparation outlines for your speeches. For purposes of illustration, this guide has three main points in the body of the speech. In your speeches, of course, the number and organization of main points, subpoints, and sub-subpoints will vary depending on the topic and purpose of any given speech. Speaking Guidelines:
• Don’t overestimate what audience knows 
• Relate subject to audience 
• Don’t be too technical 
• Avoid abstractions 
• Personalize ideas 
• Be creative
Specific Purpose:
• One-sentence statement 
• States what speaker hopes to accomplish 
• Starts with “To inform my audience…”
• Specific Purpose Guidelines:
• Full infinitive phrase 
• Statement, not question 
• Avoid figurative language
 • Limit to one distinct idea
 • Avoid being vague
