Choose a contemporary TED Talk.  Identify key components of the oral essay by answering the following questions.  Be sure to explain the effectiveness of each item and how it contributes to the author’s overall purpose.  If you are not sure as to which TED talk to use, ask your teacher for
confirmation.

Questions:
1. In one sentence (and using your own words) state the author’s thesis. Use a quotation from the essay to support your answer (3 marks).
2. Explain in your own words the purpose of this essay.  Use a quotation from the text for support.  (3 marks)
3. Explain the intended audience of the essay.  Justify your response using evidence from the text (do not just write “everybody” or “adults” as this is too vague) (3 marks).
4. Using one or two adjectives, describe the author’s tone.  Explain how the tone works to support the author’s thesis or purpose (3 marks).  Support your answer by making specific reference to the author’s diction (word choice).
5. Identify one method of development used by the author in the essay.  Be sure to quote the text and explain how the method supports the author’s thesis, purpose or tone (3marks).
6. Explain the author’s use of:
a. One rhetorical device (e.g. parallelism, balance, alliteration, verbal repetition -anaphora, epiphora)
b. One stylistic device (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, allusion) Show how each works to support the thesis, tone, or purpose of the essay (2separate answers X 3 marks each = 6 total).
