POL 338 FALL 2021Research Project GuidelineIn this research project, you will be to explain how and what your international institution hasaddressed a global issue of your interest and evaluate its achievement and effectiveness. Thereare FIVE steps you need to take to complete the project.• Step 1: Choose your issue and international institution (no grading; by Aug 27)• Step 2: Explain your issue and institution (50 points; by Sep 24)• Step 3: Submit your presentation (50 points; by Oct 22)• Step 4: Submit your early draft (no grading; Nov 12)• Step 5: Revise and submit your final paper (100 points; by Dec 8)Step 1:For the first step, you are asked to select and submit your issue and institution. First, think of aglobal issue of your interest. You cannot choose a domestic issue (like air pollution in LosAngeles) addressed by a domestic institution (domestic non-governmental organization, the Stateof California, or the Biden administration). Although there is a murky line between local andglobal topics and any global issue is indeed a local issue and vice versa, I still want you to thinkoutside of American politics and find an issue that has global importance and implication.You need to have a specific topic. For instance, you cannot examine women’s rights. You maywant to choose “equal pay” or “women’s right to vote.” You cannot explain everything aboutcivil conflict in the Middle East. You are advised to choose a civil conflict in Yemen, instead.Here is the list of issue categories you may want to explore. You can see more specific issues ifyou click each category. It is not the exclusive list of issues and you may find more and otherinteresting topics from open resources.https://www.un.org/en/global-issuesOnce you’ve selected your issue, you need to choose the international institution that has workedon the issue. Choose one specific institution. You cannot just choose the United Nations.Consider the following institutions including intergovernmental and non-governmentalorganizations and international laws. For this project, domestic non-governmental organizationsare important institutions but excluded from your selection.• The United Nations (e.g. UNSC, UNGA….) and its specialized agencies (e.g. WHO,WFP, and UNDP)• International economic institutions (e.g. the International Monetary Fund, World Bank,and World Trade Organization)• Regional organizations (e.g. European Union, African Unions, and ASEAN)• International non-governmental organizations (Human Rights Watch, Greenpeace, andDoctors without Borders)• International treaties (click the link below for a partial list of international treaties)https://treaties.un.org/Pages/ParticipationStatus.aspx?clang=_enPlease submit your (specific) issue and institution with a brief explanation of why you want tochoose these for your project. A PDF file should be submitted to Research Project Step 1page by August 27. You will receive my feedback on your submission. With my approval, youcan move to step 2. Otherwise, you will need to revise and resubmit it. No grading for this step.However, 10 points will be deducted for late submission while non-submission results in 40points deduction.Step 2:For step 2, you will be to explain your issue and institution. You need to explain the following:• Part I: Explain your issue. The following information should be included.o What is it?o Who’s affected?o How serious is it?o When did it become important?o Why is it important to address?o Why is it difficult to address?• Part II: Explain your institution in general. The following information should be included.o What is the official name of your institution?o When was it created?o Who created (if possible)?o Why was it created?o What main functions does it serve?o Who are members now?o What is an annual budget (if possible)?o How many staffs does it have?o Who is the top official now?o Where is the headquarter (if possible)?o What’s the structure?• Part III: Explain how your institution tries to address the issue.o Main tasks/objectives of your institution to address the issue• Part IV: Evaluate your institution’s effectiveness in addressing the issueo Its achievementso Its limitationsPart I, II, and III should be almost complete at this point. I will not rigorously grade Part IVbecause you may require more research to properly evaluate the effectiveness of your institution.With my feedback and more research, you will polish your evaluation and add more substancesto your final paper. Step 2 writing should be around 3-4 pages (single-spaced, Times NewRoman, 12 font size). You must cite sources and add references. Please submit a PDF file toBlackboard by Sep 24. 50 points will be assigned for step 2. 10 points will be deducted for a latesubmission.Step 3:You will be asked to make an online presentation about your issue and institution. Use Zoom,YouTube, Power Point, or Flipgrid to record your presentation. See the pages below about howto record your presentation. Do not try to include all thetexts from step 2 on your slides. Make them simple and interesting. Do not exceed 8 minutes.Please submit a link to the presentation (recommended) or the actual file to Blackboard by Oct22. 50 points are assigned for this step. 10 points will be deducted for a late submission. Yourpresentation will be shared with other classmates.Step 4:You will be asked to write a short paper based on your step 2 and my feedback. I expect you toexpand Part IV of your step 2 and polish your evaluation of the institutional effectiveness. Also,you need to add introduction and conclusion at this point. Your introduction should read like anabstract of your paper, including your issue, institution, institution’s functions to address theissue, and its achievement and limitations. The conclusion should include your policy suggestionfor this institution to improve its effectiveness. Your policy suggestion should be specific anddetailed.Your submission should be a PDF file and must be turned in to Blackboard by Nov 12. I will notgrade your early draft. For late submission, 10 points will be deducted.Step 5:This is for your final submission. Your paper should be properly formatted (single-spaced, 12Times New Roman, and normal margin). Check out if you have a title, your name, page number,subheadings, references, and citations. Most importantly, you need to improve your writingbased on my feedback on your early draft from step 4. 100 points are assigned. Please submityour final paper in PDF format to Blackboard by Dec 8. Late submission will not be accepted.
